Origins of Primary Angioplasty for the Treatment of Acute Myocardial Infarction |
Dr. William O'Neill and Dr. Jeffrey Popma discuss O'Neill's involvement in the development of balloon angioplasty. O'Neill took the technique one step further when he began doing angioplasty (PCI) in acute myocardial infarction (STEMI). He was involved in the first placebo-controlled randomized trial of placebo versus streptokinase and noted clearly that patients with open arteries fared much better than those with closed arteries.
