Dr. Bill Boden and Dr. C. Michael Gibson discuss the results of the COURAGE trial
(comparison of PCI and optimal medical therapy). Dr. Boden describes the effect the
results of the COURAGE trial have had on the number of patients visiting cath labs in the
US. The type of patient that the results of the COURAGE trial should be applied to is
addressed (does not apply to STEMI patients). The reasons for conducting the COURAGE
trial is explained. Dr. Boden addresses the criticism of the COURAGE trial that it was
composed of largely VA patients, so it may not be representative of the overall
population. The definition of myocardial infarction (MI) used in the COURAGE trial is
explained. The stent selection for the trial is discussed. The correlation between
angina relief and biomarker positivity is discussed, as it applies to the COURAGE trial.
Dr. Boden explains how the results of COURAGE can guide doctors in treating their
patients. The future analyses expected from the COURAGE trial are described.
