David Faxon reflects on Gruentzig's accomplishments |
Dr. David Faxon comments on Andreas Gruentzig's first poster presentation in 1976 at the AHA in Miami. He explains that he was drawn to the poster because it was the most crowded one. The poster described Gruentzig's procedure in which he was successful in partially ligating and then dilating the LAD of a dog. At that time, Faxon remarks, the idea was crazy, but interesting, because putting anything into the coronary artery was forbidden. In 1979 Faxon attended Gruentzig's 2nd course on how to perform balloon angioplasty. Faxon now considers the procedure an effective treatment for patients with chronic ischemic heart disease that improves quality of life when medical therapy is not effective. Faxon concludes by suggesting a need for larger, longer term studies to determine the long term risk of devices such as drug-eluting stents (DES).
